Has anyone (besides FM) ever stayed at a hotel or guest house in Kingston or Spanish Town? Not the typical touristy kind of places so I was just wondering if there are any good deals to be had....

I stayed at the http://www.knutsfordcourt.com. It is not a budget option but it is not super expensive for what you get. Half of the US army was there in March 09, not so many locals.
The staff is super friendly and it has a swimming pool.

I did have a bit of a dramatic experience there:
I was jut enjoying a Red Stripe by the pool and I felt an electrical sting on my thumb. There was this tinny black bug, which HAD A TAIL LIKE A SCORPION stuck to my skin. I pulled it out and, as a big girl, moaned a bit and continued drinking my beer.
24 hours later I could feel itchiness all over it, so bad I could not sleep. I turned on the light of my room and I noted redness spreading all over the surface of my thumb. I got really scared and googled "scorpion jamaica" to find out about these evil creatures. Went to hospital (a couple of blocks up the road) and got it checked. The doctor downgraded the issue to allergic reaction due to "INSECT"
The finger looked like if it was going to fell off. Dis-gus-ting!

Looks like a nice place....but that sucks about that little "insect" LOL. I wonder what it was and where else in Jamaica you can find them!!

Hey jamcan1, I live in Kingston so I should be able to help you out on this one. Sandhurst Guesthouse(I gather it it now called the Prestige) is inexpensive and basic. I stayed there for a few days some years ago. It is located in a good residential neighbourhood within easy walking distance of the Bob Marley museum and shopping plazas. Look at reviews on this and other Kingston hotels at http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g1473 ... otels.html and go to search and type "Kingston hotels".
